The "Iron Rose" in the Financial Forest

Every time I cycle through the skyscrapers of Singapore’s CBD, the air feels tense and hurried. But as I turn into Shenton Way, my eyes are always drawn to an octagonal red roof—Lau Pa Sat.

To my friends in Malaysia, a "Pasar" is a familiar scene of daily life, but Lau Pa Sat carries an extra touch of Victorian romance. When you park your bike and step inside this cast-iron structure—shipped all the way from Glasgow, Scotland, in 1894—you can’t help but marvel at the craftsmanship. Slender columns support a soaring dome, while intricate fretwork casts delicate shadows in the sunlight.

It’s more than just a place for lunch. It is a piece of history assembled from over 3,000 cast-iron parts—a miracle that was once dismantled for MRT construction and later pieced back together. Sitting here with a cold cup of barley water, watching the historic clock tower chime on the hour, you can almost hear the echoes of time resonating through the iron.
